Jahnavi Gogoi: Poetry

fall drive
through the woodlands
a flock of juncos
glide across the sky
another wordless goodbye

half-hearted apology
the wild rye quivers
with white-tailed deer
their antlers catching the eye
of the hunter’s moon

cider tasting
the sommelier points out
a complex note
a stranger asks me why
i stopped dyeing my hair

all through the afternoon
mending my late father’s
shirts my mother claims
a red fox appears each
time she sews

Enajori
another assamese word
i learn after years of you
and I filling the sunday crossword
with our neologisms

Enajori: In Assamese it means the bonds of both love and friendship that exist
between people.
